Cape Town’s Roads
The Koeberg Interchange
N1 Highway running underneath the Koeberg Interchange into Cape Town with Table Mountain in the background. The IRT system lanes in the centre of the road still have to be completed
The upgrade of Koeberg will provide a separate link between M5 (BlackRiver parkway) and the N1 in a southerly direction. A much needed upgrade as traffic from the northern suburbs is forced to merge with traffic from Brooklyn and Milnerton on top of the southbound bridge from Milnerton to the southern suburbs and Maitland.

Sections of the ovehead spans have been completed
The new road will also do away with the traffic merge and crisscrossing of lanes by commuters from the Northern suburbs as they merge with those from Milnerton. There should be a lot fewer accidents occuring in this area now.
The new exit to the M5 will also alleviate the problem of people pushing into the left hand lane close to the Koeberg bridge and slowing down the centre lane of the highway as they struggle to get into the lane.

This section appears to be more or less complete
Many drivers at present refuse to let people in to the left lane as they have had to wait patiently, sometimes in long queues while others jump the queue ahead of them.

From what I have seen of the construction around Koeberg Interchange this the new roadway should be complete by the end of April.
Whether all the other construction taking place in the area will be complete I cannot say as you can see from the photos there is still much work to do.

Here construction is just starting.
What makes this project really difficult for the contractors is that they have to get the bridge built without obstructing traffic to and from the northern suburbs.
With just 40 days to go I cannot see the Koeberg Interchange being complete. If the deadline is extended to the end of May the new roads in and around the Koeberg Interchange might just be ready.
The good news however is that once complete the new roads are going to take a lot of pressure off motorists who struggle to get into town each day.
Look out for my next post where I will cover the Table Bay Boulevard.
